Laboratory Services
Tests Performed by Dr. Treadwell
- CBC with manual differential and morphology - review of previous samples and review of new slides in the primary care hospital.
- Slide Agglutination
- Review of all samples taken from lymph nodes, masses, and organs.
- Expedited digital pathology to provide cytology reports in hours not days.
- Cytologic evaluation of blood, aspirates, washes, spinal fluid, and biopsies. Dr. Treadwell screens every sample. This allows rapid diagnosis of many diseases the same day.
Potential Specialized Test Recommendations
- Genetic testing
- Genetic testing for Congenital Disease and Degenerative Myelopathy
- Testing for Myasthenia Gravis, infectious diseas including PCR
- Urine samples for Trasitional Cell Carcinoma
- Protein C
- C Reactive Protein
- Latic Acid
- Sex hormone Panels for Atypical Hyperadrenocorticism
Dr. Treadwell makes laboratory monitoring plans for the early detection and continued monitoring of disease.
Featured Laboratory Interpretation
Cats: How to incorporate the Idexx SDMA test into your patient monitoring.
- SDMA (Symmetric dimethylarginine): a protein metabolite affected by changes in GFR.
- Elevated in serum before creatinine.
- Creatinine increases when 75% of renal function is lost.
- SDMA increases when 40% of renal function is lost.
- In cats SDMA increases an average of 15 months before creatinine.
- No false decrease with loss of muscle mass (like creatinine).
- When SDMA is elevated and BUN, creatinine, blood pressure, and USG are normal and urine protein negative:
- Early kidney disease is possible and recheck in 4-6 months.
- If SDMA remains elevated or any of the above tests are abnormal, early kidney disease is likely. Workup for infectious disease and imaging are added to the above testing.
- Use caution with NSAIDS, maintain blood pressure during anesthesia, consider omega 3 fatty acid supplementation, renal protective diets, increase water consumption and use IRIS Staging to make other health care decisions.
